Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Camp Lejeune

The mission: The threat of nuclear weapons and “dirty bombs” is foremost in the minds of today’s government agencies. On today’s military bases, the efforts to detect and prevent such an attack take center stage. The Defense Threat Reduction Agency is deploying and testing the latest sensor technologies to protect U.S. warfighters.

Uniquely engineered: At the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base in North Carolina, Horne was part of a team that designed and installed sensor sites to detect radioactive materials along highways and waterways leading to the base. This first-generation sensor and wireless camera system can detect radiation from a vehicle traveling faster than highway speed limits and alert the command post to risks from approaching vehicles.
