The Horne Advantage

Working at the forefront of science and technical engineering, the employees of Horne International deliver uniquely engineered solutions — uniquely engineered to solve the seemingly unsolvable…manage the unpredictable…break down technology boundaries…break through communication barriers...and anticipate problems before they impact the mission.

Beyond providing uniquely engineered solutions, we’re also uniquely qualified to get the job done. Our team includes civil, environmental, mechanical, chemical, and software engineers…health and safety specialists…and business process experts.

At Horne, our work is diverse and complex, and the projects we tackle often present one-of-a-kind challenges. But the common denominator is always a mix of engineering expertise and a relentless commitment to quality, performance, and integrity.

Horne has built a reputation for quality and integrity on a simple credo: Get it done, make it work, do it right. From concept to construction, from design to delivery. Whatever your challenge, you can count on Horne.

That’s the Horne Advantage.

Anacostia Capping Demonstration Project

The mission: Many American waterways remain environmentally hazardous because of the legacy of past industrial pollution still locked in sediment layers. The contaminated sediments are widespread and often involve millions of acres of wetlands. One approach for in-place management of sediments is subaqueous in-place capping. While it has shown some success, traditional capping does not treat the contaminants. Instead, it physically isolates contaminants from adjacent aquatic environments while leaving the capped sediments vulnerable to penetration by natural and human activities, including storm surges, burrowing by aquatic worms, dredging, and recreational boating.

Uniquely engineered: Horne is supporting the Hazardous Substance Research Center South & Southwest in demonstrating innovative technologies to improve capping by including contaminant treatment and isolation known as active capping. The Anacostia River which contains heavy metals, PCBs, hydrocarbons & chlordane is an ideal location for comparatively evaluating the most promising approach to active capping.
